Educating strangers about intactivism succesfully – a ‘how to’ story

I have many things to tell you about those myths you just told me that will blow your mind and I’m sure that if you hear me out, you will completely change your mind about having your next son circumcised. Could I have your phone number so that I can call you after our appointments?”.

Kelley Heitzman’s brilliant take on intactivism. There’s a lot to learn about how to approach cirumcision education here.

I went to a doctor appointment this morning and usually I keep to myself and don’t chat with people unless they directly speak to me.

A woman walked in moaning and groaning, huffing and puffing as she plopped down on Continue reading

Brian D. Earp believes circumcision is worth talking about. And he would like Mr. Stern and the editors of Slate magazine to know why.

Dear Mr. Stern,

I recently read your article, “How Circumcision Broke the Internet” for Slate magazine [republished as “‘Intactivists’ Against Circumcision” in Canada’s National Post]. I understand your concern about overheated rhetoric in public debates as well as the misuse of science to support untenable positions. As a scientist and ethicist who studies circumcision profes Continue reading

Strong documentary on circumcision

Mischief: Circumcise Me? A documentary on circumcision. Exploring the hows and whys of circumcision, medical pros and cons. Sexual consequences. And finally coming to a conclusion: Should this baby boy be cut – not?

Lucking Into Bris Shalom

© 2011 Sarah Rockwell / Beyond the BrisAs a Jew I grew up thinking circumcision was normal. All of my younger cousins and the sons of family friends were circumcised. All the children I babysat for were circumcised. The sound of a wailing baby at a Bris was something familiar–as was the apparently peacefully sleeping baby afterward. The first time I saw an intact baby boy, I thought he looked strange.
When I was a teenager, my father started complaining about circumcision. He would say things like, “I don’t understand why, in a world full of pain, we choose to put our baby boys through even more pain.” It was only when I was pregnant with my son, and had a serious conversation with my father about circumcision, that I discovered he would not have wanted to cut a son of his own. He said to me, “There is enough pain in this world, why would anyone want to inflict pain on a newborn baby so that pain is all he knows of life?”Sarah RockwellAlthough I grew up as a Conservative Jew, learned to read Hebrew, had a Bat Mitzvah, and even kept kosher for a while, I gradually became more secular. I discovered a Reconstructionist synagogue in Miami and loved the Rabbi’s philosophy: “Judaism is like you grandmother’s attic–you take things down Continue reading

AAP meets strong criticism for lack of ethics and flawed medical practice

by Lena Nyhus

“Cultural Bias in the AAP’s 2012 Technical Report and Policy Statement on Male Circumcision”

38 high-ranking medical doctors and professors from 17 western countries outside of the US strongly criticise the AAP stance on male circumcision in new medical article published in AAPs own journal Pediatrics (imagine that going through peer review). Danish medical Professor Morten Frisch is lead author on the paper..

I’m sure you’re eager to read the new article, but although they have promised to make the entire thing free to all readers, Pediatrics have only opened for the abstract. However, I got my hands on the whole thing. Read it here Continue reading

Frankly speaking – circumcision and foreskin restoration

The other day I received a mail from Frank, I’ll let his words speak for themselves…

Hello IQvixen,

I am submitting this photo with my circumcised penis done artfully that too celebrates my restorative powers. Hope you like it. Hope its something you can use. You can use the photo however you wish, as long as you credit 1000BodiesProject.com. It doesn’t matter to me if my name is used. I’m not promoting myself, but I do promote Bay Area Intactivists. So thank you if you should mention BAI (Bay Area Intactivists). At our BAI info booth Castro and Folsom street fairs in San Francisco, I have shown my in-progress foreskin restoration to the interested public. It’s fun and rewarding to see jaws drop in amazement upon seeing half my glans covered with grown skin. Then I pull back to show the marked improvement Continue reading
