Among the plethora of hotly debated topics in biology, one that has some of the farthest reaching effects is also commonly avoided: circumcision. It is estimated that, as of this writing, 1 in every 3 males on the planet are circumcised. To my recollection, there is no other medical procedure that has affected more than 1.2 billion (rough estimate) people on the planet save for their own birth. So with a practice as widespread as circumcision it must be not only safe, but necessary, right?

Unfortunately, that is not the case; while the procedure today is relatively safe in the confines of what it hopes to achieve, there have been plenty of notable incidents with horrifying results[1]. However, with the law of averages this shouldn’t be a surprise, right? Well, that depends on how you want to define circumcision.To do that, we’re going to examine what it actually is.
